Sherrill W. Mosee

Sherrill W. Mosee, wife and mother of two, is Founder and President of Family Care Solutions, Inc. (FCS), a nonprofit organization established in 1992. Ms. Mosee, a native of Baltimore, MD, is author of four published editions of Who's Who in Child Care in the Delaware Valley (WWICC) and creator of the FCS Child Care Scholarship and its signature fundraising event, Mom's Night Out.

After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in electrical engineering, Ms. Mosee moved to Philadelphia, PA in 1986 to work as a test engineer for General Electric. She later returned to school in pursuit of a master's degree. She completed her course work on a Friday and went into labor on Monday to deliver her first child. She earned her master's degree in electrical engineering in June 1991 from Drexel University. Becoming a first time mother opened Mosee's eyes to a whole new world. She no longer focused on writing software for test equipment, but rather studied literature to decide which baby formula was best. As she prepared to return to work, finding a quality, affordable, nurturing, and safe childcare provider, became one of her most challenging experiences. Inadequate resources available in the Philadelphia region prompted Ms. Mosee to compose and publish the first edition of WWICC, a resource guide to help working parents find childcare.

When Ms. Mosee's stepdaughter had a baby during her first year of college, she realized that many low-income single mothers did not have the resources and support to allow them to remain in school and pay for childcare. Mosee partnered with childcare providers listed in WWICC and established the FCS Child Care Scholarship in 1998 to help single mothers pay for childcare, while pursuing their dream of earning a college degree.

Mosee is an advocate for early childcare and postsecondary education for low-income women. Her persistence in these matters led to the creation of the Greater Philadelphia Consortium to Provide Child Care Access to Student-Parents. Local colleges and universities make up the Consortium, which uses federal funding to help Pell-eligible student-parents pay for childcare. Mosee envisions the Consortium concept will expand to other metropolitan regions throughout the country over the next several years.
